New Rochelle Appoints New Tax Assessor to Replace Chip Perone

City Manger Charles B. Strome and Finance Commissioner Howard Rattner announce the appointment of Dan Whittemore as City Assessor, effective May 2, 2011. He will assume the position of Louis “Chip” Perone who is retiring.

Mr. Whittemore has over 25 years experience in the assessment field, serving most recently as the Deputy Assessor for the Town of Greenburg. Under NYS Real Property Tax Law, Mr. Whittemore will fill Mr. Perone’s unexpired term from May 1, 2011 to September 30, 2013.

  1. This seems like a real fluff position
    What exactly does the New Rochelle tax assessor do? Assessments haven’t changed in 40 to 50 years and they only go in one direction; down. I fact I never heard of an assessment increase. One would hope that the assessment would increase if for example someone pulled a permit and put on a 2nd story addition, but I have my doubts. This seems like a real fluff position that the city could do without unless the city is going to start collecting the data needed to properly value our commercial and residential properties like what happens in CT, but again I have my doubts.
