2011 New Rochelle High School Graduating Seniors

Every year, when I attend the awards ceremony at the New Rochelle High School, I am amazed and totally impressed with our body of graduating students, and the colleges and universities they will be attending. Last night at just one of the awards ceremonies, I was again in awe of our students. New Rochelle is a wonderful place to reside.

Here are just the colleges and universities that the top 25 students will be attending:

  1. Yale or Jail!
You know what they say about New Rochelle High, Yale or Jail!

I don’t want to take credit for coining that phrase, but its stuck with me since I heard it a few weeks ago.

    1. THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING AROUND THIS TOWN…
MOST OF THEM ARE GOING TO JAIL!
GO AHEAD, SEE THE LOCAL CRIME MAP!!! HERE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCREEN! AND A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T LIKE TO HEAR THE TRUTH!

  2. Graduation
yes, the students honored at the city council awards ceremony were wonderful as are many others, many teachers, and New Rochelle is truly, as you describe, a great place to live.

Ms. Rosen, what concerns many of us, taxpayers and nontaxpayers both, are emerging indicators that the District is underperforming and requires substantial and meaningful corrective action. Sometimes even the best things wear down, break down, or go down and responsible people need to work together as a caring community to make changes. Our young people deserve it.

Today the Journal News published “College Readiness in the Lower Hudson Valley.” Did you get a chance to see it? It says many things but most important to me is that of the 39 School Districts listed, New Rochelle’s percentage of college readiness rests at 35% APM Rating. APM stands for Asperational Performance Measure — or the percentage of students who graduated on time and scored at least 80 in Regents math and at least 75 on Regents English. Out of 39 listed high school districts, we were ranked 34 meaning only 5 Districts were ranked lower than New Rochelle.

Ms. Rosen we are better than that. We owe it to all of our young people, those we lauded at the Council Meeting as well as the typical kid putting in his or her work day. We don’t need blame; we are better than that as well. We need to find out why this is happened and what we can do about it to provide a safe haven here and a promising college future for those seeking it and a great 4 years for those with other plans.

I would love to hear your ideas, your friends ideas and those in the community. We have some new membership on the School Board and I sincerely hope that they are moved to make positive changes in curricula, staff, parental relations; whatever it takes.

Enjoyed your spirit and don’t treat this as a downer. It will change!
