An elderly woman stepped on the gas when she meant to step on the brake, according to witnesses at a nearby A&P supermarket, sending a green Ford Taurus crashing through the storefront window of George’s Hair Salon in the Quaker Ridge Shopping Center in the Wykagyl section of New Rochelle. No one was seriously injured although patrons and workers in the hair salon were visibly shaken.
An elderly man was in the passenger seat and a woman, thought to be care-giver for the couple, was in the back seat.
“She should have been driving”, said one witness about the caregiver in the back seat.
New Rochelle police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene.
The store front was completely caved in, the window shattered with glass strewn about the sidewalk and inside the store.
The area was cordoned off with yellow police tape as on-lookers gathered.
“This has to be the most dangerous shopping center in Westchester County”, said a woman who does her regular grocery shopping at the A&P. “There is always a problem with elderly drivers, speeding drivers and fights over parking spaces and right of way”.
