New Rochelle High School Students Rack Up National, State and County Awards

National MeritNew Rochelle High School students were recognized with dozens of awards this year from New York State, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, Westchester Community College and the Westchester County Board of Legislators/Jandon Foundation.

NYS Scholarships for Academic Excellence

NYS Scholarships for Academic Excellence provide up to $1,500 per year for up to five years of undergraduate study in New York State. This program provides scholarship assistance to outstanding New York State high school graduates. Each year, 8,000 scholarships are awarded – up to 2,000 scholarships of $1,500 and 6,000 scholarships of $500 to top scholars from registered New York State high schools. Awards are based on student grades in certain Regents exams. Recipients can also receive other non-loan student aid, but the total cannot exceed the cost of attendance. Scholarship winners must attend a college or university (SAE’s cannot be used for trade schools) in New York State. Those who do not attend a college or university in New York State forfeit the award.

National Merit Scholarship Awards

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, established in 1955, is an independent, not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. NMSC’s goals have remained constant since its inception: to identify and honor academically talented U.S. high school students, to stimulate increased support for their education, to provide efficient and effective scholarship program management for organizations that wish to sponsor college undergraduate scholarships.

Since its founding, NMSC has recognized 2.9 million students and provided over 360,000 scholarships worth more than $1.4 billion. The honors awarded by NMSC to exceptionally able students are viewed as definitive marks of excellence. Recipients of Merit Scholarship® awards, Achievement Scholarship® awards, and corporate-sponsored Special Scholarships have increased the nation’s respect for intellectual accomplishments and have contributed significantly to its talent pool of future leaders.

Students invited to participate in the 2013 National Merit Program’s College Plans Reporting Service: Avi Barzilai, Claire Deane, Zachary Nawy, Dennis Spencer, Elizabeth Bedrick, Amarachi Ihionu, Robyn Oster, Elise Wien, Michael Buchbinder, Zachary Manley, Matthew Schiller, Nicole Calautti, Jacob Mittleman, Jonathan Seiden.

Jacob Lynch has been selected as the winner of a National Merit Scholarship.

Westchester Community College Architectural Awards

New Rochelle high School is the only high school that is offering Architectural Drawing and Architectural Design for college credit through the ACE college program. One student was selected from each of the college level courses for an award. Ace high school teachers received an award for participation in the Advanced College Experience (ACE) program. The awards were presented at a ceremony for all participating ACE high schools, teachers, administrators and students were in attendance.

Westchester County Jandon Scholarship

The Jandon Scholars Program which awards 15 college scholarships to low income academic achievers each year. In partnership with the Westchester County Board of Legislators, the Jandon Foundation, a private foundation created by Jane and Donald Cecil of Harrison, NY, offers Jandon Scholars receive $10,000 over their four years in college as well as a laptop. The program is unique in that it follows the students throughout their college career

New Rochelle High School has three Jandon Scholarship winners: Emily Posner, Ghipsel Cibrian and Rafael Cisneros.
