New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has cancelled his inaugural Conference on Emergency Preparedness due to prepared for a weather emergency.
Meteorologists are expecting Hurricane Sandy, a low category hurricane, is expected to collide with a winter storm moving in from the Great Lakes and arctic air blowing in from the South. The National Weather Service has labeled the resulting mess which is expected to arrive as Halloween approaches as “Frankenstorm”. Hurricane Sandy left 39 dead in Haiti and Cuba.
The inaugural Governor’s Conference on Emergency Preparedness was set to bring together hundreds of the State’s first responders and the world’s leading experts and leaders in the fields of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. Individuals who have dealt with some of the most devastating incidents since 9/11 were to address current risks, articulate practical approaches to strategies for planning, response and recovery, and increase knowledge on how the State can best prepare for disasters by using resources wisely, responding more effectively, enhancing resiliency, and creating new partnerships.
The two-day conference was to highlight new leadership and direction in the state’s emergency services and homeland security.
Leading experts scheduled to appear were CNN’s Peter Bergen, Rohan Gunaratna, Brian Michael Jenkins, and emergency management and intelligence leaders in various fields including terrorism, cyber security, and meteorology.
