New Rochelle, NY (January 3, 2013) Iona College announces the appointment of Sibdas Ghosh, Ph.D. as the next Dean of the School of Arts and Science.
After a national search Dr. Ghosh has been appointed the senior administrative officer of the School of Arts and Science, effective April 2, 2013. Dr. Ghosh will provide leadership in teaching, research, and service. He will also create an entrepreneurial atmosphere in which new and marketable programs are developed, and will be an effective advocate for the strategic priorities of the School.
Dr. Ghosh is a gifted teacher, scholar and administrator with over 25 years of academic and leadership experience in higher education at public and private institutions both domestic and international. Collaboratively, he has promoted national initiatives, brought about institutional transformation, implemented innovative programs, enhanced student and faculty development, established community partnerships and enriched diversity. “We look forward to Dr. Ghosh’s arrival and application of his many and varied talents to the School of Arts & Science,” said Provost Brian Nickerson, Ph.D.
Dr. Ghosh holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Waterloo in Canada and a M.S. in Crop Physiology from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. He is currently serving as Professor and Chair of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Dominican University in California where he has also served as Associate Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences.
Dr. Ghosh is well published, with both personal and collaborative works, including 38 articles/chapters and 2 edited books, 60% of which are co-authored with his students. He has made over 150 presentations at national and international conferences including the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER), Posters on the Hill, and Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).
As Principal Investigator (PI), co-PI and collaborator he has succeeded in securing over $43.21M, for capital improvement, research, instrumentation, and conference/workshop grants for various projects at Dominican University and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Among his many significant achievements, Dr. Ghosh:
* collaboratively developed and implemented a plan, working together with the Dean, Provost, President and Trustees, to build a $21M Science and Technology Center, which opened in fall 2007. It was the first new academic building constructed since 1963 and received a “Top Project Award for Educational Facilities” from the North Bay Business Journal.
* implemented a new era of scientific research at Dominican in biofuels, breast cancer, malaria, aging, sudden oak death, coral reef ecosystem, bioacoustics, stem cell biology, molecular cell biology, field biology, medicinal chemistry, tissue engineering, bioremediation, and nanotechnology.
* developed and implemented cooperative programs with international and local institutions in the public and private sectors including: (i) cooperative programs with National Park Service providing opportunities for undergraduate research and internships, (ii) Swedish Exchange/Undergraduate Research Program with University of Skövde, Sweden, (iii) Global Environment Appreciation Travels, a program to introduce important ecological sites to Dominican students, (iv) Intergenerational Experiential Learning Program with County of Marin, Division of Aging and Adult Services and the Dominican Neighborhood Association for our Pre- Med students, (v) Kaiser Permanente Mentoring Program for Pre-Med students, (vi) Marin Math Circle, a program for Marin elementary, middle, and high schools mathematics students, and (vii) National Mathematics Engineering and Science Academy (MESA) – an outreach program for middle and high school students of 1st generation and low income families.
Throughout his esteemed career, Dr. Ghosh has received many awards and honors, including teacher of the year (2007–DUC). He has been recognized by Minority Access Inc., Washington D.C., with the 2009 National Role Model – Administrator and Mentor Award for Exemplary Achievements in Expanding Opportunities for Others. Dr. Ghosh is an elected biology councilor of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) since 1998 and most recently, he has been appointed to the CUR Executive Board (2011–present). In fall 2012, he was appointed Chair of the CUR Finance Committee.
Dr. Ghosh and his wife Dr. Jayati Ghosh have a daughter – Taumoha and a son – Moyukh both are currently in medical school.
