Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino met with Allison Macfarlane today, releasing the following statement:
“I thank Chairman Macfarlane for her visit to Westchester today, and I enjoyed the opportunity to share my perspective on Indian Point. First and foremost, I sought assurances that the plant is operating safely, which she assured me it is. I also wanted to make sure that the lines of communication were open between myself and the chairman. Her outreach to local stakeholders today is much appreciated, and I look forward to our continued dialogue. Lastly, I asked her to clarify a statement made by the past NRC chairman during the Fukushima event regarding the possibility of a mandatory 50-mile evacuation zone. Chairman Macfarlane assured me that this statement was not policy. In all, it was a constructive discussion, and I reiterated my position that so long as the NRC deems the plant to be safe, I am supportive of its continued operation.”
