NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Elementary school-aged children in Pre-K through Grade 5 are invited to participate in a variety of free programs being held at the New Rochelle Public Library during spring vacation week.

The week begins with two hands-on programs celebrating spring. On Monday, March 25, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, children and their parent or care-giver are invited to create “Crafts that are for the Birds.”

The projects will include a gift for the birds and a bird-inspired gift for someone you love, as well as birders books – so families can keep track of the birds they see in New Rochelle. The workshop will be in the Meeting Room on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 10:45 am.

The second “Spring has Sprung!” workshop, on Tuesday, March 26, from 1:00 – 2:30 pm, will involve preparations for gardening – indoors and out. Participants will have the opportunity to plant seeds in a variety of fun and surprising containers – including ones that will grow into “eggheads”. The workshop will be in the Meeting Room on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 12:45 pm.

Wednesday, March 27, two “Family Films with Big and Small Stars” will be shown on the big screen of the recently refurbished Ossie Davis Theater. At 11:00 am, the feature film will be “Horton Hears a Who!”

The adorably wacky plot, based on a book by Dr. Seuss, involves Horton the Elephant, who becomes a reluctant hero when he discovers the microscopic city of Who-ville on a floating speck of dust – that no one believes exists. He embarks on a hilarious adventure to save the town from the dangers of the jungle. The movie stars the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, runs 86 minutes, and is rated G.

The Secret World of Arrietty, an animated adventure based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series The Borrowers, will be shown at 2:00 pm. Residing quietly beneath the floorboards are little people who live undetected in a secret world to be discovered, where the smallest may stand tallest of all. From the legendary Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, HYPERLINK “http://kidstvmovies.about.com/od/ponyo/fr/ponyorev.htm” Ponyo), the 94 minute film is rated G.

One of the library’s favorite children’s performers, Jim McClenahan, returns to the library on Thursday, March 28, at 2:00 pm for his Magic and Comedy Show. Jim’s terrific blend of awesome tricks and side-splitting jokes guarantees a good time, no matter how old or young you may be! First-come, first-served to the 138-seat capacity of the Ossie Davis Theater at the Main Library.

These programs are made possible by the generosity of the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library, a 501c3 non-profit organization.
