NEW ROCHELLE, NY — This spring, The College of New Rochelle (CNR) welcomed Dr. Maria Rosa Doria Ribeiro, a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence from Brazil, to campus to teach a class on Global and Transnational Feminisms. The course covers the history of the feminist movement. In the fall, she will teach a new course Introduction to Latin American Studies, and a seminar on Latin American immigration.
Dr. Maria Rosa Doria Ribeiro arrived in January 2013 from the University of Sao Paulo. She holds a Ph.D. is in History, and her dissertation focused on the emergence of feminism in Brazil in the context of the fight against a dictatorship. She also has a master’s degree in education from University of Campinas. While a visiting Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at CNR, Dr. Ribeiro will help develop a certificate program in Latin American/Caribbean Studies. She is also looking forward to learning about the lives of Latin American people in this part of the United States. “I want to see the ways new immigrants are integrating into the local communities,” she said.
She selected CNR because of its tradition of educating women.
The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program and Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program bring foreign scholars to lecture and/or conduct postdoctoral research for up to a year at U.S. colleges and universities.
Approximately 900 visiting scholars receive Fulbright awards annually.
The Program was established by the U.S. Congress in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The Fulbright Program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
