Barbara Norrine Louise Lockwood Russell, 84, passed away on June 15, 2013. She was a teacher for twenty-three years in the city of New Rochelle, N.Y. In 1988 she was chosen as TEACHER OF THE YEAR by the coalition for Youth of New Rochelle. From her appointment in 1966 to its closing in 1980, Mrs. Russell taught primary grades at Stephenson School. Transferring to Webster School, she was one of the Core educators who researched, studied, prepared, wrote, and explained the Magnet School programs. Mrs. Russell also taught early childhood grades in both Mount Vernon, New York and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Russell was born in West Haven, Connecticut, and attended school in Mount Vernon, New York. At the former Davis High School she was Senior Class President, and gave the Salutatorian speech for the senior ceremony. At State University at Buffalo, she was an Honors graduate, editor of the college magazine, and Coronation Queen for the city of Buffalo. Her graduate work was in Speech Pathology at Temple University.
Mrs. Russell was active in a multitude of civic and social organizations. At her parish of St. Simon The Cyrennean Church in New Rochelle, she has served on the Altar Guild, as Vacation Bible School Teacher, Capital Campaign Fund, and Search Committee member, and member of the Cursillo Movement.
As a charter member of Zeta Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, she has continued that membership through the Boule.
Joyful to Barbara Russell’s heart, have been her years of involvement with the young people and staff of Fun School.
Daughter of her deceased parents, Arline and Charles Lockwood, Mrs. Russell was also predeceased by a sister, Dolores Rebouin of El Paso, Texas. She is survived by a daughter Kathy Rimmere and son-in-law Kelly Rimmer and granddaughter, Ashe Roberts of Stone Mountain, Georgia. A brother, Albert Lockwood also survives, along with several aunts, uncles, many cousins and several life-long friends.
A memorial Service will be held at St. Simons the Cyrennean Church, 135 Remington Place, New Rochelle, Thursday, June 27th at 11:00am.
