NEW ROCHELLE, NY — “Summer on the Sound” is the focus of the New Rochelle Public Library’s summer reading activities and centerpiece exhibit, on view in the library’s Lumen Winter Gallery beginning July 1st through August 30th. The exhibit features the stunning photographs of Dr. Robert Reid, who has captured the beauty of the present-day Glen Island Parky, as well as a variety of archival photographs and postcards of John Starin’s Glen Island Resort, which was one of America’s premier theme parks in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A public reception will take place on Saturday, July 6th, from 4:00 – 5:30 pm. The exhibit is free and open during the library’s regular summer hours of operation.
Robert Reid, M.D. is a retired physician/urologist from the Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. He came to America after a successful career as a professional jockey in Panama. He rode for five years between the ages of 14-19, and was the leading jockey for three of the five years, having won over 500 races. After retiring in 2003, Dr. Reid has devoted his time to photography, sketching and painting, and has exhibited throughout Westchester County. He has concentrated on the melding of graphic arts and computer generated images, and utilizing black and white photography to achieve results beyond color photography.
The New Rochelle Public Library’s archival collection has been made possible by long-time collector Dominick Bruzzese, who has shared his photographs, postcards and memorabilia with the library and its patrons for several decades. Other archival images have been provided by local historian Karen S. Allen, Candace Taubner, and the Westchester County Historical Society.
