UPDATE/OFFICIAL: New Rochelle High School Principal Reginald Richardson and Assistant Principal Joseph Starvaggi received two phone calls shortly before noon threatening to “blow up the place.” All students and staff were evacuated. The decision was made to end the day at NRHS. Authorities are presently inspecting the building section by section. Students with special transportation needs have been safety evacuated to a nearby school where busses are picking them up. Night school programs are cancelled.
EDITOR’S NOTE: As a vocal critic of past NRHS evacuations, I would note that this evacuation was very well done. I was on scene almost immediately as my son called to tell me he was being told to leave school and I now live very close to the school. It was clear that staff was prepared and the kids were calm and orderly. The decision to close the school was prompt and the kids were moved off school grounds effectively. This is a marked contrast to the two prior incidents involving electrical fires. A dramatic improvement from what I have witnessed in the past.
