Anthony Joseph Barrella Obituary, WWII Vet, U.S. Space Program Engineer, Westchester County Purchasing Agent, Co-Founder New Rochelle Little League

NewImageNEW ROCHELLE, NY — Anthony Joseph Barrella, passed away in the early morning hours of Jan 14, 2014 at the age of 92, known as “Barrels” to many of his closest friends and family.

Anthony was born in Mt. Vernon, NY on August 24, 1921, to the late Nicholas and Julia (Borelli) Barrella. Anthony graduated from Manhattan College in 1950 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He spent the majority of his engineering career with several large manufacturing firms in support of the U.S. Space program. In his late 50’s he retired from engineering and worked as a Purchasing Agent for the County of Westchester, NY until the age of 70. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946 where he was honorably discharged. Barrels was one of the founding fathers of the New Rochelle Little League and served the organization faithfully until he was well into his 80’s. He was a big supporter of Blessed Sacrament Church and past president of the Irish Christian Brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years the former Louise Fodero of New Rochelle, whom he married on August 29, 1948, his sons, Nicholas (Susan), Michael (Karen), his daughter Joann (John)Bombace and six grandchildren, Alexandra, Elizabeth, Matthew, John, Michael and Heather.

He was predeceased by his only sibling Joseph A. Barrella in 2005.

Viewing hours are 2-4pm & 7-9pm on Thursday, January 16 at Lloyd Maxcy’s Beauchamp Chapel in New Rochelle, NY. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17 at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle, NY at 10:30am. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to New Rochelle Little League, 30 Trinity Place, New Rochelle, NY 10805.
