Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Carl Ragland aka “Leakumns”, 35, of 275 S. Columbus Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York, was convicted today after a jury trial of all counts in the indictment charging him with one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class “B” Felony, one count of Assault in the First Degree, a class “B” Felony, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, class “C” Felonies, one count of Resisting Arrest, a class “A” Misdemeanor.
On the evening of June 18, 2013, the victim and the defendant were ordering drinks at OK Freddy’s, a bar in Mount Vernon, when they began to argue.
The defendant left the bar and went inside an apartment building at 241 S. 9th Avenue and then exited the building where he again confronted the victim. The defendant pulled out a handgun and fired, striking the victim in the chest.
The defendant then fled up 9th Avenue.
The victim staggered across the street where she called 911.
Mount Vernon police officers responded to the scene. The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center; enroute gave a physical description of her shooter and further identified her shooter as the defendant.
At approximately 2:40 P.M., on June 20th, 2013, officers from the Mount Vernon Police Department and the New Rochelle Police Department responded to an address in the City of New Rochelle. The defendant was found hiding in a bedroom closet at that address.
Initially he resisted, but was ultimately placed under arrest at the scene.
Sentencing will be on May 15th, 2014.
The defendant faces a maximum sentence of twenty five years in state prison.
