NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle retained its ranking as one of the safest cities nationally in 2012, according to the 2013 Annual Report released this week by the New Rochelle Police Department. The City was the 10th safest city nationwide out of 110 similarly-sized cities (population 75,000- 99,999). Additionally, the City of New Rochelle retains the lowest crime rate among similar municipalities in Westchester County and New York State.

Incorporated in the annual report were Part I crime statistics for 2013, showing an overall reduction of 3% and decreases in a number of categories, most notably Robberies (9%) and Burglaries (14%). And when compared to figures over the past decade, the crime rate remains historically low. In 2013, the department responded to nearly 50,000 calls for service.

“We are gratified to see our hard work paying off,” said New Rochelle Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll. “These numbers reflect the vigilance of the department, especially in regards to robberies and burglaries.”

The report also details advances in technology by the Department, including implementation of a Municipal Wireless Mesh Network and video network system. Additionally, the department was reaccredited for the fourth time by the New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation Council, marking twenty years of continuous accreditation.
