For the first time, the City School District of New Rochelle has placed a Muslim religious holiday on the official school calendar.
Eid al-Adha for 2014 begins in the evening of Saturday, October 4th and ends in the evening of Sunday, October 5th.
Eid al-Adha means “Festival of the sacrifice” or “Feast of the Sacrifice” or “the Greater Eid” and is the second of two religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year. It relates to the story of Abraham (Ibrahim) being willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Ismail).
Eid al-Adha is the latter of the two Eid holidays, the former being Eid al-Fitr.
Eid al-Fitr for 2014 was Tuesday, July 29th; for 2015 it is celebrated on July 18th.
Eid al-Fitr means “Festival of breaking of the fast” or “Feast of Breaking the Fast” or “the Lesser Eid” and marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
So far, only Eid al-Adha has been added to the 2014-15 school calendar.
