“Shotgun Blasts” Send New Rochelle Schools into Lockout as NRPD, WCPD Swarm Area Around NRHS

UPDATE 5:00 PM: NRPD says “shotgun blasts” were fireworks set off by pair in backyard of 2 Cameron Place. No charged were filed. Reports at various locations determined to be echo of fireworks exploding.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Police are responding to a report made by an NRPD officer of shots fired in the Nature Study Woods off Webster Avenue near the Hutchison River Parkway. Nature Study Woods is county property in New Rochelle.

New Rochelle High School has been placed on Lockout/Lockdown.

Westchester County Police have joined in the search for suspects. A Westchester County Police helicopter is also over the scene.

Police have stopped some young people that were in the wooded area but have released them after questioning.

UPDATE 1:20 PM: Lockout at New Rochelle High School has been lifted. Westchester county police and New Rochelle Police still searching Nature Study Woods by land and by air. Still no suspects found.

UPDATE 1:37 PM: NRPD has received additional calls of shots fired near Nature Study Woods and officers on scene heard them also. WCPD sending more units to the scene.

UPDATE 2:06 PM: Journal News reporting that a lockdown was put into effect at New Rochelle high school.Trying to confirm with school spokesperson.

UPDATE 2:09 PM: New reports of shots fired in area police getting reports. Civilian just waived down an officer said he saw a person come out of a house on North Avenue and shoot off a shotgun.

UPDATE 2:57 PM: Police have surrounded a house at 2 Cameron Place, reports of male/black at that location, witness said m/b fired a shotgun into the air. All major media outlets are on corner of Rosehill and Webster. All traffic, N/S and pedestrian is closed on North Avenue from Eastchester Road to Seacord Road.

There have been several past incidents involving firearms at 2 Cameron Place. The most recent was August 28, 2014. The family had previously intervened to take firearms away from a man residing at that address. Police were called because the man was reported to have ordered one or more firearms by mail. Talk of the Sound was on the scene that day but did not report it at the time because police on the scene stated that the call was determined to be a medical call, the man was taken away in an ambulance.

UPDATE 3:00 PM: Two people walked out of house at 2 Cameron Place, a male/hispanic and female/hispanic going south on North Avenue with a backpack. Police have apprehended them. The pair told police there are no firearms, no fireworks in the house and no one else in the house.

UPDATE 3:24 PM: New Rochelle High School Vice Principal Joseph Starvaggi issued a statement:

UPDATE 3:29 PM: NRPD have given the all clear, traffic is to be re-opened, all units back in service. New Rochelle High School students dismissed.

UPDATE 3:48 PM: Unofficial reports are that Albert Leonard Middle School and Webster Elementary School were on Lockout today.
