NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s soccer team improved its record to 5-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action with a 1-0 victory over Monmouth University Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
Freshman Franky Martinez scored the game-winner in the 80th minute off assists from seniors Michael Holzer and Ignacio Maganto. After a Maganto corner kick, Holzer attempted a shot that was blocked. Martinez rifled in the rebound to the far post for his first career tally.
It was the first goal conceded by Monmouth in MAAC play this season and since Sep. 23 in a loss at Seton Hall. The last time a MAAC team scored on the Hawks was in the regular season finale at Canisius on Nov. 9, 2013.
After a first half in which the two teams each recorded five shots, Iona was able to find opportunities in the second against an undermanned Monmouth squad which was forced to play with 10 following an 18th minute red card.
Iona had an earlier chance in the 57th minute when freshman Marcos Nunez’s shot was stopped by a diving effort from Monmouth netminder Eric Klenofsky. Later in the match, Maganto had a chance to extend the lead in the 83rd minute when his breakaway attempt was turned aside by Klenofsky.
Besides a 15-8 advantage in shots, Iona also held an 8-4 cushion in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Julian Petrello made three saves in net for the Gaels to record his sixth shutout of the season, and 12th of his career. Klenofsky made five saves for the Hawks.
Iona is back in action Wednesday, Oct. 29 when it travels to Fairfield for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
