Talk of the Sound has learned that Martin Sanchez, a former member of the New Rochelle Board of Education, will be meeting with Joseph Williams, Assistant to the Superintendent for Human Resources, on Wednesday to discuss what Sanchez describes as continual harassment of a particular staff member by a teacher at one of the District’s elementary schools.

Sanchez, one of the few Hispanic board members in the District’s history, has often advocated for Hispanic families and staff in New Rochelle.

According to an email obtained by Talk of the Sound, the harassment has “resulted in many incidents of derogatory and racist commentary” directed at the employee. The employee has documented similar conducted going back to 2009.

In one recent incident, the teacher is alleged to have said “how can you afford a car when all you eat is rice and beans.”

The teacher is White and the staff employee is Hispanic.

The teacher is a well-connected person in New Rochelle whose father, a lawyer, was a prominent elected official in New Rochelle and who now represents the school district.

Talk of the Sound will have an update after the meeting on Wednesday.
