Iona Men’s Cross Country Alum Harbert Okuti Finishes 19th at 2014 NYC Marathon

Harbert OkutiNEW YORK CITY — Iona College men’s cross country alumnus Harbert Okuti finished 19th overall at the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon this past Sunday. The Arua, Uganda native completed the 26.2 mile event in 2:22:34.

The New York City Marathon has grown from a Central Park race with 55 finishers to the world’s biggest and most popular marathon. The 44th installment began at the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Staten Island and crosses all five boroughs before the finish line at the southern end of Central Park in Midtown Manhattan.

The former Iona cross country / track and field standout was the second Ugandan native to cross the line, following Stephen Kiprotich’s fifth place, 2:13:25. Kenya’s Wilson Kipsang was the race winner in 2:10:59.

In 2013, Okuti competed in his first NYC Marathon, finishing 41st with a time of 2:29:39. In 2011, Iona alum Frank Corrigan finished 24th overall in 2:25:35.
