NEW ROCHELLE, NY — In a non-conference game played at the Wellness Center, The College of New Rochelle dropped its home opener to the College of Mt. St. Vincent, 72-64. The 2014 HVIAC Championship banner was unveiled prior to the game.

Trailing by as many as 25 points, 57-32, with 10:12 left in the second half, the Blue Angels staged a furious comeback, clawing to as close as six, 68-62, with 20 seconds left, but did not draw any closer.

Jah-Leah Ellis and Hannah Cambel scored 19 points apiece to pace the CNR offense. Ellis added game-highs with 12 rebounds and five assists.

Mt. St. Vincent’s Christine Barone led all scorers with a game-high 23 points, adding 11 rebounds.

Neither team led by more than five over much of the first half, until the Dolphins used a 10-0 run over the last 3:38 of the opening stanza to take a 37-25 lead into the break.

Mt. St. Vincent extended the run to 16-0 to take a 43-25 lead with 17:01 left in the game. The lead stood at 25 with 10 minutes left before the Blue Angels made a run of their own. A 19-2 run over the next 11 minutes made the score 59-51 with 6:01 left and brought CNR all the way back into the game. The Blue Angels brought their deficit to within six points on three occasions, but did not complete the comeback.

The Dolphins dominated the scoring in the paint, posting a 44-8 advantage in post scoring. A 20-2 advantage in bench scoring also played a significant role in the outcome, as did the 54 total fouls.

The Blue Angels return to action on Monday, traveling to take on Pratt Institute in their HVIAC opener. The game is slated to begin at 8:00 PM.
