Iona Women’s Basketball Offense Slumps In Setback At Kansas

LAWRENCE, KS — Senior guard Damika Martinez scored a game-high 25 points but the Iona College women’s basketball team was held to 27.6% shooting overall in a 90-49 setback to Kansas Wednesday evening at Allen Fieldhouse.

Sophomore guard Marina Lizarazu scored nine points while the duo of Kristin Mahoney and Philecia Gilmore combined for 13 points and four assists. Held scoreless for the first time in her career, junior forward Joy Adams contributed a game-high 13 rebounds.

After the two teams traded baskets over the first minute of play, the Jayhawks scored the next 10 points to grab a 12-2 lead with 13:22 remaining.

A three point play by Martinez trimmed the margin to seven before Kansas went on a 27-2 run to take a 39-7 lead with 1:32 left in the half. The Maroon & Gold ended the period with a 5-1 charge, cutting the deficit to 40-12 at intermission.

In the second half, the Jayhawks connected on nine three-pointers, and grabbed its biggest lead of the game, 82-37, with 4:24 remaining in the game. Martinez scored 17 of her points in the second stanza.

Kansas held a 46-28 advantage in rebounds, and outscored the Gaels 22-6 on second chance points. The Jayhawks turned 17 Iona turnovers into 23 points. Asia Boyd led Kansas with 19 points, and was one of four players in double figures.

Iona is back in action Sunday, when it welcomes Stony Brook to the Hynes Center for a 2:00 pm tip.
