College of New Rochelle Women’s Basketball Enjoy Repeat as Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament Champions

BROOKLYN, NY –- Jah-Leah Ellis was named Tournament MVP after her second 27 rebound performance in as many games as The College of New Rochelle defeated Yeshiva University, 85-61, to capture the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament title for the second straight year.

Ellis earned MVP honors with a dominant performance after nearly tallying a triple double, recording game-highs with 28 points, 27 rebounds, nine assists, four steals and three blocks. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by Hannah Cambel, who recorded 22 points, including six three-pointers. Alyssa Pechin added 10 points and nine assists.

Simee Rosner paced Yeshiva with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

The Maccabees scored the first seven points of the game and led, 7-0, with 16:13 to go in the first half, and led by as many as 10, 16-6, with 13:29 left before the break. The Blue Angels then turned the tables, running off a 31-11 run to take at 10 point lead of their own, 37-27, following a Cambel trifecta with 3:06 before halftime. CNR took a 43-37 lead into the locker room.

Yeshiva cut the lead to four early in the second stanza before the Blue Angels slowly expanded the lead, taking their largest lead, 82-58, as a Dynejah Matthews layup gave CNR a 24 point lead.

The Blue Angels return to action on Friday, December 5, traveling to Patchogue, NY to take on St. Joseph’s College-Long Island in a non-conference game slated to tip at 7:00 PM.
