Iona College Senior Damika Martinez Earns Second MAAC Player Of The Week Honor Of Season

EDISON, NJ — Iona College women’s basketball senior guard Damika Martinez was named MAAC Player of the Week for the second time this season for her performances in the Gaels’ two games last week. Martinez has earned the award 11 times during her career.

Martinez averaged 27.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and one assists and one block per outing in non-conference action. Martinez started the week with a game-high 25 point effort at Kansas on the road. Martinez connected on nine field goals in the game, including four three-pointers, to go along with four rebounds.

Against Stony Brook, Martinez scored a game-high 29 points, grabbed five boards, and had two blocks. In the contest, Martinez became the seventh player in league history to eclipse the 2,000 point mark, and first in Iona women’s basketball history.

Martinez is now fourth all-time on the MAAC scoring ledger. She is also one of only two active players in the nation with 2,000 points.

Martinez earned the award the first week of the season, and leads the league with an average of 26.2 points per game. She is also posting 3.3 three-pointers per game.

The Gaels are back in action Friday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 pm when they travel to Lawrenceville, NJ for their MAAC opener against Rider.
