EDISON, NJ — Iona College men’s basketball freshman Schadrac Casimir was named MAAC Player of the Week for the second time this season for his performances in the Gaels’ two contests last week. He was also honored by OneBidWonders.com with the same award as well as ECAC Co-Rookie of the Week.
Casimir broke a 34-year old Iona rookie scoring record with a 40-point effort vs. Delaware State Wednesday night. It matched the highest single-game scoring output in NCAA Division I this season. Casimir shot 11-of-13 from the field, 8-of-9 from beyond the arc and 10-of-11 from the free throw line to account for the point total. Gary Springer Sr. – an Iona Goal Club Hall of Famer and the last freshman (one of two all-time) to ever win the MBWA Haggerty Award for New York Metropolitan Player of the Year – held the previous record of 35 against Wagner on Jan. 13. 1981.
His eight three pointers also set a new Iona freshman record, surpassing Iona three-point king Sean Armand’s six long distance connections on two occasions in 2010-11.
For the week, Casimir averaged 21.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists while holding a 54.5 FG%, 64.3 3FG% and 90.9 FT%.
Casimir earned the award the first week of the season and currently No. 10 in the MAAC in scoring and No. 1 among the league’s rookies.
The Gaels are back in action Sunday in their 2014-15 MAAC opener at Monmouth at 4:30 pm.
