Mission Peru Week at Iona Preparatory School K-12 Begins Monday

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Iona Prep today launched its annual fundraising drive to support its Mission Peru program, part of the Campus Ministry.

The Mission Peru service immersion trip from March 25 to April 3 is considered the Prep’s most important service trip as it incorporates so many of the aspects of its Mission as a school. Students are engaged in direct service to the materially poor: building houses, painting, cleaning, as well as getting to know the people. They work together and build a sense of team and brotherhood as they make connections with ministries associated with the Christian Brothers in Peru.

During the mission, students spend a great deal of time writing, praying, and reflecting on their experiences. And they also get a good feel for the sweep of Peruvian culture and history, from the Incas to Colonial to contemporary Lima. The trip is capped off by time in the Sacred Valley, where they visit one of the greatest archaeological sites known to humanity, Machu Picchu.

Iona Prep views Mission Peru not just as an experience for the twelve students and three faculty members, but as a way for the entire community to be called to awareness of our responsibility for those marginalized by poverty.

Iona Prep is seeking financial support toward the goal of $7,500 that will be used in their work with the poor.

As part of the fundraiser, the school is selling a “Mission Peru” t-shirt for $25.
