Swimming Places Second at HVIAC Invitational Championships

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle hosted the HVIAC Invitational Championship on Saturday at the Wellness Center Pool, and rookie Zuri Mena had an outstanding meet, winning two individual events while also taking part in a winning relay.

Mena dominated the distance events, touching first in both the 1000 Free and the 500 Free.  In the former, the freshman won by 1:15 seconds over the second place swimmer to earn the Blue Angels nine points, and won the latter by 48 seconds to earn another nine points for CNR.  In the final event of the meet, she teamed with Barrett Pritchard, Meaghan King and Claudia Benitez in the 200 Free Relay to post a winning time of 2:12:03, outdistancing the second place team by 21 seconds. 

Pritchard earned second place points in the 50 Free, touching in with a time of 31.60, while Benitez also earned a second place finish in the 100 Breast, completing the distance in 1:31.36.

 In the 200 Medley Relay, which was the opening event of the meet, Pritchard, Benitez, Manuela Patino and Allison Gurney combined for a second place finish in a time of 2:40.12.

CNR seniors Rita Saad and Manuela Patino were recognized at the meet for the contributions to the swim team.

 In the team scoring, St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn emerged victorious with 100 points, followed by the Blue Angels (65 points) and the College of St. Elizabeth (34 points).

 The College of New Rochelle concludes its season on Monday, traveling to St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn for a dual meet slated to begin at 7:30 PM.
