NEW ROCHELLE, NY — In the final regular season game of the year, The College of New Rochelle dropped a non-conference game to Division II Mercy College Monday night at the Wellness Center.
Jah-Leah Ellis led all scorers with 27 points, adding 10 rebounds. Alyssa Pechin added 11 points, four assists and four steals, while Caitlin Harrison chipped in with eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Mavericks were led by Brandon Roberts who tallied 23 points and 13 rebounds. Tatiana Parish added 22 points, including six three pointers.
Playing their first March game in 30 years and taking on the Mavericks for the first time in that same time span, the Blue Angels hung tough with the taller scholarship opponents for much of the first half, and held a two point, 20-18 lead with 7:29 left in the first half. Over the next 7:29, Mercy’s Parish nailed four three pointers to spark a 23-4 run that gave the Mavericks a 41-24 lead at the break.
Mercy broke the game open in the second stanza, and led by more than 30 in the closing minutes.
The Blue Angels return to action on Wednesday, as the team has earned a spot in the upcoming ECAC DIII Metro Championships. The postseason berth is the first for the basketball team in 30 years, as the 1984-85 team advanced to the NCAA DIII Championship game that season.
