FAIRFIELD, CT – The Iona College lacrosse team was defeated by Fairfield 13-7 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon at Rafferty Stadium. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 0-3 in MAAC play, and 4-7 overall on the 2015 campaign.
For Iona, senior captain Meghan Testoni led the team with two goals and two assists, giving her a four point afternoon. Junior Mary Kate McCormick added two goals, giving her 22 goals and 19 assists on the season. Junior Anna Kelly and freshman Tori Anderson were responsible for the other Gael goals. Senior goalkeeper Blaire Nathanson registered eight saves on the afternoon.
The Maroon & Gold quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead on McCormick’s first tally of the game only 2:04 into the game, but the Stags quickly responded with five unanswered goals of their own, opening up a 5-1 lead with 14:11 remaining in the first half. Iona and Fairfield traded a goal apiece to head into the locker room with the Gales trailing 6-2.
Testoni scored the first goal of the second half only 1:12 in to cut the Stag lead to three, but Fairfield kept answering with goals, quickly building an 8-3 cushion with 22:18 remaining in the contest. Sophomore Alex Fehmel recorded five goals on the afternoon to push her season total to 24 in the victory. Testoni and McCormick each netted their second goals of the game in the half to complete the scoring for the Gaels in the defeat.
Each team picked up 12 ground balls, with the Stags outshooting the Gaels 28-18.
The Maroon & Gold continue MAAC play on Saturday, Apr. 4 when they travel to Buffalo, NY to take on Canisius. The opening face-off is slated for 11:00 am.
