CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The College of New Rochelle softball team held leads in both games of the doubleheader at Pine Manor College Sunday, but was unable to hold off two late rallied, dropping both games in non-conference action at the PMC Softball Field.
In the opener, the Blue Angels took advantage of a wild Gator pitcher, racing out to an 11-1 lead after an inning and half. In the first inning CNR benefited from eight wild pitches or passed balls, four walk, an error and a hit batter to push across seven runs while connecting on only hit. Five passed balls, four wild pitches, three walks and an error in the second brought the lead to 11-1 before PMC began to chip away at the CNR advantage, starting with a five run bottom of the second.
With the score 11-7, the Blue Angels tacked on another run, again taking advantage of wildness in the circle, to take a12-7 lead. At that point, the Gators scored six unanswered over the next three turns at bat to earn the 13-12 win.
The second game started in a similar fashion, with CNR taking a 6-1 lead after an inning and half, again taking advantage of inaccuracy on the part of the Pine Manor pitchers. Also mirroring the opener, the Gators rallied to take a 15-8 lead after five innings. CNR pulled back two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, but the Blue Angels comeback attempt fell short, 16-11.
CNR is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Purchase, NY to take on Purchase College in a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
