Iona Prep Relay team sets school record, qualifies for New Balance Nationals

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Jordan Washington ’15, Jonathan Lopez ’15, Carter Graves ’15 and Matt Sullivan ’16 set a school record of 1:03.07 in the shuttle hurdle relay at the New York Relays the weekend of April 17-18, qualifying them for the New Balance National Championships in mid-June.

Coach Jan Mitchell said the quadruplet ran a “flawless” race with split times of 15.3, 15.9, 15.8 and 15.3. Washington also placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, while Lopez and Graves recorded personal bests in the 400-meter hurdles.

Sullivan also placed seventh in the pole vault at 12 feet, 6 inches, giving Iona Prep four of the top seven performers with medalists Ryan Herrera-Murphy ’15, Matthew Fay ’15 and Jahkeem Wheatley ’15 finishing second, third and sixth, respectivelly.

Andrew Cannistraci ’16 nearly recorded a 10-foot personal best in the discus–he is No. 3 in New York State and the No. 1 junior–and finished fourth in the shot put. Joshua Diakanwa ’15 put up a personal best in the triple jump to take third and is currently No. 5 in New York.

Four ninth graders also medaled in the freshmen 4-by-400-meter relay.
