Rutgers Tops Iona Softball At Home

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College softball team fell to Rutgers 10-0 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Donald E. Walsh Field. The Gaels trailed by just three runs after the initial six innings, before the Scarlet Knights added seven runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Iona was held to just two hits in the contest, both off the bat of sophomore SS Katie Newton. Newton picked up the team’s first hit of the day with a one out infield single in the third, before adding another single in the sixth.

Redshirt sophomore Christine Costello allowed one run in two innings of work for the loss. Sophomore Sarah McMahon gave up two runs in three frames, while junior Jordan Courage surrendered three earned runs over the final two innings.

The Gaels are back in action Saturday for their final home MAAc doubleheader against Fairfield, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
