NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The Iona College women’s soccer team dropped its 2015 regular season opener 2-0 to LIU Brooklyn Friday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

The Blackbirds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with what turned out to be the game-winner, when Tori Shinkowitz headed in a cross from Lucy Gunton-Jones in the ninth minute. Allegra Ondrejka registered the game’s other goal in the 78th minute, lofting a shot just inside the top of the net from ten yards out.

Trailing by one goal, Iona saw a pair of potential equalizers waved off by offsides calls. In the 26th minute, junior Erika Flowers’ tally was negated before a shot by sophomore Charlotte Stuart was called off in the 69th minute.

The Gaels held a 10-9 shot advantage in the contest, but were outshot 8-5 on attempts on goal. Stuart and classmate Julia Campagna each recorded a team-high three shots in the game. In her Iona debut, senior goalkeeper Taylor Rice made six saves while her LIU Brooklyn counterpart, Jessica Montrose, tallied five stops.

The Gaels look to bounce back Sunday afternoon, when they welcome Vermont to Mazzella for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
