WHITE PLAINS, NY –The Iona College women’s soccer team fell to NJIT 4-1 in non-conference action at Lubetkin Field. The Highlanders used a three-goal first half and held on to the early advantage.
NJIT scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game to lead 2-0. Arianna Gerber’s unassisted tally in the fifth minute and Neema Liverpool’s volley finish off a cross from Jaclyn Ward in the seventh minute were the goals for the home team. Less than 20 minutes later, Noelle Batista scored from 25-yards out to make it 3-0.
In the second half, the Gaels broke through with rookie Mariana Jaramillo netting her first collegiate goal. Jaramillo beat both her defender and NJIT net minder Karen David in the 65th minute. The Highlanders got the goal back in the 75th minute when Brooke McGee put home a rebound.
David stopped five second half shots while Samantha Bersett earned the win with three saves in the first for NJIT. Iona graduate student Lauren Ferris made four saves.
The Gaels out shot NJIT 18-11 in the contest including 12-5 in the final 45 minutes. Iona also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Maroon & Gold return home for a midweek tilt vs. Hartford on Thursday (Sep. 3) at Mazzella Field.
