NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Still another event celebrating New Rochelle’s 325th Anniversary is about to come! While the anniversary of the City’s settlement by the Huguenots took place in 2013, the 325th Anniversary Committee is pleased and proud to announce the completion of a project over two years in the making: the restoration of the Jacob Leisler statue. A rededication ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2013 at 2:30 pm at the island park where the statue stands at the intersection of North and Broadview Avenues. The statue was originally dedicated over one hundred years ago in 1913, when it was first installed at its present location.
The restoration of this iconic statue was made possible by the extensive fundraising efforts of the 325th Anniversary Committee. “We are grateful for the generosity of the sponsors and many donors who gave of their resources, time and talents, which allows us to preserve our history for generations to come,” said Committee Chair Marianne Sussman. “The Anniversary Committee has dedicated these funds to preserving New Rochelle’s historic legacies, the first among them being this valuable historic monument.” No taxpayer funds were utilized for this purpose.
The statue has been restored by John Scott, Conservator, whose services have been sought and utilized for international and American museums, universities, preservation architects, and art collectors, dealers and auctioneers.
