NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College women’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in overtime at Sacred Heart in non-conference action at Campus Field. After the Pioneers knotted the game at 2-2 less than four minutes left in regulation, the home team scored with 18 seconds to play in the first overtime to earn the win.

After nearly 75 minutes of scoreless play, the final 16 minutes saw four goals before the overtime period. Sacred Heart’s Dana Cosmedy broke the scoreless tie in the 75th minute as she headed in a corner kick from teammate Elisa Robiglio for the game’s first goal.

Just over four minutes later, rookie Brianna Hernandez found the equalizer, burying a shot attempt from just outside the 18-yard box for her second collegiate goal.

Sophomore Julia Campagna made it 2-1 Iona in the 83rd minute when she deflected a Charlotte Stuart attempt past Sacred Heart keeper Talia Schwartz, also her second goal of the 2015 campaign.

In the 87th minute, the Pioneers’ Alex Mesropyan hit a shot from 20-yards out to force regulation.

Cosmedy knotted her second goal of the season on a header from a cross inside the goalie box for the game winner.

Graduate keeper Lauren Ferris made seven saves for the Gaels. Schwartz had eight for Sacred Heart.

The Gaels open MAAC play next Saturday (Sep. 26) at Niagara.
