NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College volleyball team used its strong serving to dominate Queensboro Community College, 3-0, in the home opener on Thursday in New Rochelle. The Mustangs recorded 20 aces in the three-set win. The scores of the sets were, 25-9, 25-14 and 25-8.
The Lady Tigers jumped ahead 3-1 in the first set. Monroe answered with an attack error from Queensboro and an ace from Cristen Coryatt to even the score. Later in the set, leading 6-5, the Mustangs used a 6-0 run to take a 12-5 lead. Karen Souza scored the first point on a kill. The next five points came from four Barbara Maximiano aces and an attack error. The Lady Tigers scored a point to pull within 12-6, but Monroe went on a 9-0 run to make the score 21-6. In that scoring spree, the Mustangs had two kills and two aces and the other five points came from Queensboro errors. Monroe took the set, 25-9.
Set two was back-and-forth early on as an Ashley Ramos kill made the score 6-4. Queensboro pulled within 6-5. Later in the set, the Mustangs led 14-11. From there, Monroe used an 8-0 run to take a 22-11 lead. In that run, Ramos had three aces, Coryatt had two kills and Jourdan Hodge added a kill. Monroe took set two, 25-14.
The final set saw Monroe score the first two points and then the Lady Tigers responded with three points to grab a 3-2 advantage. From there, the Mustangs used a 10-1 run to take a 12-4 lead. Maximiano keyed the run with three kills and a pair of aces. An Alexis Booker kill ended the set and 25-8. Monroe improved to 18-0 with the win.
Ashley Ramos had eight aces and Barbara Maximiano added seven. Indira Rojas chipped in with 17 assists. The Monroe College volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, September 19, when they face Catawba County College in Alexandria, Virginia. The first serve is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
