NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College volleyball team kept a pair of streaks alive over the weekend as they improved to 20-0 to open the year. Additionally, they failed to drop a set in both matches, beating Catawba Valley 3-0 and Northern Virginia, 3-0. The team has dropped just two sets all season.
In the win over Catawba, Barbara Maximiano had a match-best 13 kills. Ashely Ramos led the team with 11 digs and Indira Rojas recorded 23 assists. The scores of the sets were 25-21, 25-22 and 25-15.
Set one was back and forth with both sides being tied at 16-16. From there, Monroe scored four straight points to take control of the set. A pair of attack errors and two Maximiano kills accounted for the points. A Ramos kill finished the set for Monroe.
The second set was also tied late, at 17-all. From there, Catawba jumped ahead to lead 22-17. The Mustangs fought back and scored eight straight points to take the set, 25-22. The final eight points came from three Karen Souza aces, three Maximiano kills and two attack errors.
Set three went to Monroe, 25-15. Tied of the seesaw action and tied at 10-10, Monroe closed out the match with a 15-5 run.
The second match of the day saw the Mustangs beat Northern Virginia, 25-12, 25-11 and 25-16. Monroe took an 11-3 lead in set one and never looked back. The lead got as large as 16 points on a Maximiano kill that made the score 21-5.
Set two had Monroe build a 14-3 advantage before winning 25-11. The final point came from a Maximiano serve that was misplayed.
Set three went to Monroe after pulling away late. A 6-0 run put the Mustangs up, 23-14 and put the game out of reach. Alexis Booker finished the match off with a kill.
The Monroe College volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, September 22, when they face Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York. The first serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
