NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s soccer program defeated the Yale Bulldogs 2-1 in non-conference at Mazzella Field late Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Gaels improved on their streak of allowing less than two goals in all but one game this season.

The Marron and Gold’s offense was all supplied by the freshman Aristotle Seferlis. The North Bergen, NJ native celebrated his birthday but netting two goals within three minutes of each other at the start of the second half.

The first goal of Seferlis’s career came from Oscar Gonzalez in the 59th minute; the junior midfielder fed the eager forward with a long lob pass that Seferlis touched once and chipped over the Yale goalkeeper, Kees Schipper.

Seferlis’s second goal came in the 61st minute; he attempted to put away a corner but was stuffed on his first attempt; however, on his fourth shot of the day, he found the back of the net for the second time by sneaking it under that goalie’s leg. Sophomore Brendan Reardon and freshman Humbert Ferrer each fired two shots during the process of the game.

The Gaels controlled the first 70 minute of the match with relative dominance, but Yale made a brief charge in the final moments. Avery Schwartz took a spinning shot off and scored off an assist from Cameron Riach in the 76th minute. Iona was able to hold off the remainder of the Bulldogs assault and improve their record to 4-3-1 on the year.

The shot advantage fell in favor of the Gaels 13-5, and Iona had eight corner kick attempts in the first half, nine overall in the game. Junior Julian Petrello needed to make just one save in net.

The Gaels are next in action for their home opener this Saturday, Sept. 26 at 3 P.M. against the Niagara Purple Eagles.
