Monroe Volleyball Beats Nassau C.C. for the Fourth Time this Season

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College volleyball team defeated Nassau Community College, 3-0, to im prove to 35-2 on the season.  The victory, which was the fourth over Nassau had scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-13.  The team wore pink to help raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

The game was the fifth-annual Dig Pink game for breast cancer awareness and prior to the game, the Mustangs honored Janet Henry, a 15-year breast cancer survivor and current Monroe College culinary student.  She was presented with flowers and a team bag.

Set one was close early as neither side could build a lead larger than four points.  Finally, with the Mustangs up, 18-14, Monroe closed out the set with a 7-1 run.  A service error and a Cristen Coryatt kill put the Mustangs ahead, 20-14.  Nassau answered with a point.  Strong serves from Nautica Vega and kills from Karen Souza closed out the set as Monroe took it, 25-15.

The second set had Monroe jump out to a 5-1 lead.  The lead got up to eight points when a Gabriela Nobrega service ace made the score 15-7.  A Jazmine Ortiz kill accounted for the final point of the set and gave Monroe its largest lead.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 10-0 advantage in set three.  Jourdan Hodge scored the first two points of the run with kills, and the remainder came from the serves of Nobrega.  Later in the set, an Alexis Booker service ace put Monroe up 24-11, giving them their largest lead of the match.  They put away Nassau off a bad set from a Taylor Chambers serve.

The Monroe College volleyball team returns to action on Thursday, October 22, when they face Morris County College in New Jersey.  The first serve is slated for 7:00 PM.
