NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College men’s basketball team lost its second-straight game on Monday as they fell to Frederick Community College, 73-70, in a game played in Frederick, Maryland. The team is now 14-7 on the season.
It was a tale of two halves for the Mustangs, as they built a halftime lead, only to see it evaporate in the second 20 minutes. Monroe jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game on a pair of buckets from Shackquiel Scott and a dunk from Jarron Chapman. A Ran Tut three-pointer at 14:04 made the lead eight points (16 to 8). Four minutes later, off of a Felix Carlsson steal, Lawahn Lewis buried a three-pointer to make the score 28-14 for Monroe. A minute after that, Taquan Givens got a steal and took it back for a layup to the Mustangs up by 16, 30-14. They led at the half, 40-34.
Monroe held a short lead throughout the majority of the second half. Frederick finally took the lead the 5:50 mark of the half. A Tyler Ancrum free throw tied the score at 57-57. Kemar Campbell made a free throw in the closing seconds to make the score 71-70, but Frederick went on to win 73-70. Tut led the way for the Mustangs with 10 points. Ancrum collected a game-high four steals.
The Monroe College men’s basketball returns to action on Thursday, January 21, at Harford. The tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
