NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The 20th Annual Bokandeye African Dance and Drum performance at the New Rochelle Public Library will be presented on Saturday, February 27 at 2:00 pm, in the Ossie Davis Theater. A “BID Family Day” event, the performance is free and open to all ages.
Anthony Wooden, founder and director of Bokandeye African Dance Troupe, will lead his acclaimed troupe of dancers and drummers in a program depicting the rich cultural meanings of the movements and dress of African village life, and the role of the extended family. The performance is a stirring demonstration of brilliant costumes, reverberating rhythms and exuberant dance.
The presentation will also include performances by members of the 6-week classes Mr. Wooden has conducted at the library this winter. Over 40 participants, ages 4 to 70 years, have taken part in this annual immersion in African culture.
Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis, to the capacity of the 138-seat Ossie Davis Theater. Audience members are advised to arrive early, as this performance is always filled to capacity. This event is a BID Family Saturday program, made possible by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District (BID), in a partnership with the New Rochelle Public Library, School and PTA Council, and Parks and Recreation. The African Dance classes were made possible by the generosity of the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library.
