NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College baseball team saw its ten-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday, dropping the second game of a doubleheader with Suffolk County College after taking the opener 4-2.

Monroe took control of game one with a three-run fourth inning. With the contest scoreless, Alex De La Cruz walked.  He scored on a double to right by Isaiah Torres.  Cam Crabbe followed with a single, but Torres was thrown out at home.  Crabbe moved to the second on the toss to the plate.  Crabbe came in on an RBI triple from Endy Villalona, and Monroe led 2-0.  Two batters later, C.J. Moore ripped a base hit through the right side to plate Villalona, bringing the Mustangs to 3-0 at the end of the fourth inning.

The Sharks pulled within a run in the sixth inning with a two-run homer, bringing the score to 3-2, but in the bottom of the inning the Mustangs pushed across another run.  Torres walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Crabbe.  Torres scored on a throwing error by Suffolk.  Monroe went on to win 4-2.

Edwin Gonzalez tossed a complete game to earn his first win of the season.  He walked one, struck out eight and gave up six hits.

Monroe jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead in game two with single runs in the first and second innings.  De La Cruz led off the first with a base hit.  He stole second and moved to third on a fly out.  De La Cruz scored when Crabbe stole second and knocked the ball out of the second baseman’s glove.  The run in the second came when Ramger Iglesias doubled and stole third.  He came in on an RBI single from Ronald Jackson.

Suffolk fought back with a run in the third and two more in the fifth to steal a 3-2 lead.  Monroe took its turn in the fifth, trailing by one.  Jackson singled and moved up on a sacrifice bunt.  He later came in on a throwing error by Suffolk.

The Sharks scored another run in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.  In the bottom of the sixth, the Mustangs got runners on second and third, but couldn’t score.  Suffolk held on for the 4-3 win and the split of the twin bill.

Jackson was 2-2 in the game.  Andres Fernandez was the hard-luck loser, who gave up all four unearned runs. Oliver Mailloux tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Monroe College baseball team will head to South Carolina this week to compete in a tournament at the Cal Ripken Experience at Myrtle Beach.  The team will open play with a rematch against Cumberland County College this Thursday at 3:00 PM.
