Iona Track & Field Kick Season at Monmouth Opener

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed in their first meet of the 2016 season at the Monmouth Season Opener. The men’s team took home second out of eight teams with 46 points, while the women finished in fifth with 36 points. 

Top performers on the men’s side included sophomore Liam Dee who took home first in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 1:53.44. In addition, Junior Ross Wightman finished third behind Dee in the 800m with personal-best time of 1:55.82. Senior Xavier King took home sixth in the 800m with a time of 1:58.27. 

The 1,500-meter run proved to be another standout race for the men’s team as they placed four top ten finishers, led by sophomore Johannes Motschmann who finished first with a time of 3:58.69. Right behind Motschmann was freshman Sebastian Hendel, who finished in second with personal-best 3:59.11. Sophomore Chartt Miller took home fourth with a time of 3:59.63, and junior Brandon Allen finished right behind Miller with a fifth place finish of 4:01.52. 

The women’s side featured many standout performers as well, led by freshman Julia Kearley who took home first in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:15.72. Sophomore Rachel Garn finished in sixth at 2:16.59. 

The 1,500-meter run proved to be the women’s standout race as well with five top ten finishers and numerous personal-best times. Senior Tara Jameson led the charge with a first place finish and personal-best time of 4:40.23. Fellow senior Melissa Hawtin took home third with a personal-best time of 4:44.31. Sophomores Kara McKenna and Jessica Scheriff took home fourth and fifth respectively with personal best times of 4:44.84 and 4:45.30. Behind them was sophomore Daniele Martino who place seventh with personal-best time of 4:48.73.  

Junior Cassandra Gill placed ninth in the 3k with a personal-best time of 10:55.87. 

The Maroon & Gold will be back on the track again this coming weekend with a pair of meets; the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia  Friday April, 1 and Saturday April, 2 and the Stanford Invitational on the same days.
