NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College baseball team definitely had their bats going against Nassau on Wednesday, as they slugged 15 hits in a 12-10 loss to the Lions.
Nassau took a 2-0 lead early in the game with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Mustangs earned one back in the top of the third inning, when an Isiah Torres single plated Jose Pena. The score remained at 2-1 until the fifth inning, when Monroe scored five times.
Pena led off that inning with a single. Two batters later, Alex De La Cruz had an infield hit. They moved to second and third later in the inning on a passed ball. Torres drove them both home with a 2-RBI single, and Cam Crabbe homered to account for the third and fourth runs of the inning. Endy Villalona promptly hit a double, and scored when C.J. Moore reached on a fielding error. After four and a half innings, Monroe led 6-2.
The score reached 8-2 an inning later, when Torres connected on a double that drove in Michael Ramirez and De La Cruz, both whom reached on walks. Nassau answered with six runs in their half of the sixth, and the score was tied at 8-8 heading into the eighth.
Monroe took a 10-8 lead with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Torres hit a double, bringing Ramirez home, and later scored on a wild pitch. The Lions responded with four runs in their half of the eighth, and held on for a 12-10 win. Torres had four hits and five RBI in the game, while Oliver Mailloux was tagged with the loss in relief. The Mustangs are now 14-6 with the defeat.
