NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Seton Hall in non-conference action at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates scored five times in their first two at bats while the Gaels scored their four runs in the fifth and sixth innings in the loss.

Rookie RF Fran Kinsey was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman 2B Sean Breen, senior LF Travis Mistretta and sophomore CF Jon Budesa had two hits apiece. Breen recorded the Gaels’ lone extra base hit, a one-out double in the seventh, his fifth of the season. Mistretta and junior 1B Matt Byrne accounted for Iona’s other two RBI. Byrne stole his team leading 10th base of the season.

Sophomore RHP Patrick Ryan took the loss, tossing the first inning. Rookie RHP Antonio Velardi pitched the next three frames and was followed up by four scoreless innings from junior LHP Andrew Pucillo, junior RHP Jake Kurz and sophomore RHP Kyle Ackley. The Iona quintet limited the Pirates offense to just four hits in the defeat.

Iona opens MAAC play at home this weekend when it hosts Marist for three contests to start a seven-game home stand over the next two weeks.
