NEW ROCHELLE, NY — On Sunday, May 1st at 6:30 p.m. The Picture House Regional Film Center will continue its new film series, Worldview with an advance screening of the new documentary Girls of Daraja: Powerful Beyond Measure.  The brand new chapter in the award-winning series on the Daraja Academy in Kenya will have its world premiere at The Picture House followed by a discussion and Q&A with the film’s director Barbara Rick and the founders of the Daraja Academy Jason and Jenni Doherty, educators from the San Francisco Bay Area who moved to Africa to start a boarding school for girls in 2008.

Girls of Daraja: Powerful Beyond Measure is the exciting follow-up to the award-winning Girls of Daraja and School Of My Dreams about exceptional Kenyan girls empowered to change the world. This third film documents an historic cultural exchange with high schools in Northern California as two Daraja students and their principal journey to the U.S. for the first time, sharing powerful stories about the impact of girls’ education worldwide.

After the screening, TPH Director of Programming Clayton Bushong will moderate a discussion and Q&A with the director of the film, Barbara Rick and the Academy’s founders Jason and Jenni Doherty. Barbara Rick is president and founder of Out of The Blue Films, Inc., an award-winning independent documentary company officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) by the IRS for its dedication to the creation of exceptional films that explore, articulate, and celebrate humanity. A Peabody and Emmy-winning filmmaker and journalist for more than twenty years, Ms. Rick has produced, directed, and written highly acclaimed films and national news broadcasts.

The five-part Worldview film series explores — through the lens of film — how we learn about people and issues outside of our daily sphere of reference and what our responsibility is to the global society at large. Films will be recent releases— both documentary and narrative, international and domestic—that expose the audience to a perspective of a culture, an issue, or an event that is exceptional in its depth, access, or nuance. The series will consist of daytime educational screenings and discussions for middle and high school students from lower Westchester plus an evening public screening and post-film discussion with a well-known moderator and guests. The Worldview series is made possible by the generous support of the The Countess Moira Charitable Foundation.

Tickets to the public screening of Girls of Daraja: Powerful Beyond Measure and post-film discussion are $15/general admission, $12/members, $10/seniors and free for students who present valid i.d. and are available at www.thepicturehouse.org or at the box office, 175 Wolfs Lane, Pelham, NY 10803. School and community groups interested in daytime educational screenings in the Worldview series should contact education@thepicturehouse.org or call 914-738-3161.
