NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College Lacrosse team used a balanced offensive attack to top Quinnipiac, 10-6. The Gaels picked up their second straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road win to improve to 2-2 in league play.
Iona’s offensive attack was spearheaded by Junior Erin Pugh, who netted four goals while also grabbing four draw controls. The wealth was spread throughout the Maroon & Gold, as six Gaels netted a goal; senior Mary Kate McCormick, juniors Katelyn Noschese, Grace Celona and Rachelle Serafini, sophomore Pamela Giordano and freshman Christine Gironda.
Senior goalkeeper Thea Leitman picked up five saves manning the net for the Gaels.
Serafini scored to open the contest, and after some back-and-forth play, a three goal run late in the first half allowed them to enter the lockeroom with a comfortable 6-2 advantage.
Iona would continue their streaking offense in the second half, pushing their lead to 8-3 in just moments. The Bobcats could not muster any attack against the Maroon & Gold defense, going seven straight minutes without being able to find the back of the net. After finally quelling their thirst for a score, Iona quickly pushed any thoughts of a comeback to the wayside with two scores to make the tally 10-4.
Quinnipiac would go on to put together a two goal run in the final minutes, bringing the final to 10 to 6.
The Gaels outshot the Bobcats (28-16), and secured more ground balls (9-7) and draw controls (10-8). They also won the turnover margin (15-17). Quinnipiac secured more saves (10-5) and caused more turnovers (8-7).
The Maroon & Gold will return home to Mazzella field this Saturday Apr. 16 for a 1:00 pm showdown against the Siena Saints.
