NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Weekly workshops at the New Rochelle Public Library and the Huguenot Children’s Library continue, providing a great number of opportunities for children and teens to be active and engaged in enriching activities while school is closed. All programs are detailed at the library’s website, www.nrpl.org. For the week of August 1st, the library is also offering a number of free cultural programs for all ages in the Ossie Davis Theater.
The featured classical musical for the Summer Family Film series on Monday, August 1st, at 6:00 pm, will be the 2002 film, Chicago, which runs 112 minutes and is rated PG-13. Nightclub sensation Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) murders her philandering husband, and Chicago’s slickest lawyer, Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), is set to defend her. But when Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) also winds up in prison for murder, Billy takes on her case as well, turning the two murderesses against each other in a fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows in 1920’s Chicago.
On Tuesday, August 2nd, at 7:00 pm, the Music of Java and Bali will be performed by the ensemble, Gamelan Son of Lion, one of the oldest handmade gamelan orchestras in America. The percussion instruments of bamboo rattles, gongs and drums will accompany Indonesian masked dancers, who will perform segments from Ramayana, an epic poem from India.
Evan Gottfried will perform the Live Show for the Younger Set on Wednesday, August 3rd at 10:30 am. Children ages 2 – 5 years will have a great time Singing and moving to the fun songs of guitar-strumming Evan Gottfried.
Later that day, at 2:00 pm, the featured family film will be The Peanuts Movie. Life always seems complicated for good ol’ Charlie Brown, the boy who always tries his best against seemingly impossible odds. When the Little Red-Haired Girl moves into his neighborhood, Charlie Brown develops a crush on her. Meanwhile, his best friend Snoopy embarks on an epic adventure in a fantasy world. As a World War I flying ace, the lovable beagle pursues his nemesis, the Red Baron, while also trying to win the heart of a beautiful poodle named Fifi. The 2015 movie runs 93 minutes.
