Tennis Balls Now Recycled Through New Program at Pinebrook Courts

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Over a thousand tennis balls have been recycled this season as part of a new program brought courtside by the New Rochelle Department of Parks and Recreation. By installing a simple green “Ad-In Bin” to the outside fence at Pinebrook Tennis Courts, the department can quickly and easily collect unwanted balls that would ordinarily be thrown out. The balls are collected and shipped for free to a recycling center. The program and bin, created by Retour Tennis, aims to educate communities about the importance and value of recycling tennis balls.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this green initiative” said Parks and Recreation Commissioner Bill Zimmermann. “The bin is easy to use and extremely effective.”

Under the direction of Recreation Supervisor Frank Bernabei, the City of New Rochelle initiated the program in April 2016 and has since recycled over 1,200 tennis balls. For more information, contact Frank Bernabei at (914) 654-2084, M-F, 8:30am – 4:30pm.
